Dining & Nightlife

From a twice-daily routine to a healthy diet, skincare expert and celebrity facilalist Deborah Mitchell reveals her rules to achieve the perfect complexation.

1: DON’T UNDERESTIMATE “THE DOUBLE CLEANSE”: The first cleanse can move the dirt around your face so doing it twice means you get deeper into your pores. Use my Hydro Cleansing Milk to hydrate and remove daily pollutants. Created with delicate organic jojoba – the closest match to our own natural oil – it helps to balance and condition our complexion while being gentle enough for all skin types.

2:  UNDERSTAND YOUR OWN SKIN TYPE: Just because you skin is dry or oily to the touch, it doesn’t necessarily follow that this is your skin type. Learning what type you have, and how to look after it, is essential for daily care. Make sure you choose the correct products: dry skin becomes drier if you use rich moisturisers because they tell your skin not to produce oil; equally, over-oily skin gets worse by drying it out.

3: IT’S TRUE, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT: Ensuring good vitamins levels is vital for healthy skin. The quickest way to achieve this is to eat a varied diet and mix up the colours in your vegetables – think of traffic lights, with each colour representing what your body needs. Add to this olives, olive oils, nuts and avocadoes to improve your skins elasticity leading to balance and smoothness.

4. DON’T CHOP AND CHANGE YOUR SKINCARE: Make sure you give the products time to do their job properly – if you keep swapping and switching what you put on your skin from day to day it can become over-sensitive, leading to breakouts and rashes. Because I have created an intelligent skincare range, the products work in tandem with each other and many are water based, even the creams, so they won’t block the benefits of the other products.

5: CLEANSE, TONE & MOISTURISE: A twice-daily skincare routine is essential to ensure your skin is at its healthiest. Throughout the day, your skin comes into contact with all manner of dirt, pollutants and environmental factors, and not taking care of it properly – morning and night – and you’ll soon find you’re suffering from constant spots, break-outs, blocked pores and early ageing signs.

6: MAKE SURE YOU STICK TO A ROUTINE: Find a daily regime that really works for you and the each product will start to work in synergy with one another to give you the best chance of a glowing, radiant complexion. For example, I like to remove dying cells with my Divine Cream and then encourage the production of new cells with my Age Defiance Cream. I fortify this routine with my innovative Hydrogels, which smooth out those dehydrated lines especially round eyes and lips, and shrink pores.

7: START YOUNG: It’s never too early to start looking after your complexion. While you may have glowing skin in your teens and 20s, don’t take it for granted that by the time you reach your 40s things will still be the same. In fact the younger you take care of what nature gave you the healthier it will be as you get older. So whatever your age, whether you’re in your early 20s or late 40s, and still haven’t got a daily routine then start now – not having one means you’re missing out on your very best skin.

7: TREAT YOURSELF TO REGULAR FACIALS: Find a salon you trust and feel comfortable with and chat with the therapists about the kind of treatments they offer – choose something that you can’t do at home; for example at my Heaven Spas you can opt for an amazing massage or innovative facial that will lift, firm and smooth. It’s not just because of the feel-good factor a trip to a salon brings … monthly skin peels brighten; laser treatments tighten and improve uneven tone and hyper-pigmentation; while injectibles plump.

8: CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE WITH THE SEASONS: Whether it’s protecting your skin in the sunshine or battling against the elements in the winter, you skin will have different demands throughout the year. These changes through the seasons invariably mean your complexion experiences all sorts of issues, so you need to adjust your daily routine to keep it in tip top condition.

9: USE A WEEKLY MASK: While your everyday cleansers and moisturisers are great to keep the surface of your skin in good condition, adding a once-a-week face mask – like my Silver Bee Venom – can help with a whole host of woes, from dehydration and excess oil to clogged pores, fine lines and break-outs. Masks are designed to penetrate deeper into the layers of your skin, helping draw out impurities, remove the build-up of dead cells and increase hydration to give your face the TLC it really needs.

10: GREAT SKINCARE SHOULDN’T COST A FORTUNE: I strongly believe that the very best skincare and a healthy, radiant complexion don’t need to break the bank. In fact, most of my Heaven essentials come in a variety of sizes and prices, and have been created to tackle a variety of issues – for example a cleanser that also firms skin – meaning you can opt for the product that not only suits your skin type but your budget too.
