Back to Business – Express Lunches
Posted on September 30, 2016
As much as you’d enjoy a full hour, sat canalside with a coffee in the winter sun, awaiting your cooked-to-order food to arrive, the reality of a lunch break is far different. You grab your usual from the nearest possible place and head back to your desk, hoping you haven’t missed anything important. However, there’s no reason to substitute sustenance for convenience. The Mailbox offers a range of express lunches to either grab-and-go, or to quickly escape the office and refuel. Here are our top picks:
Located canalside, Pennyblacks offers a perfect lunchtime call-in for those wanting lunch away from the office. The bar menu offers speedy food and plenty of it. Choose from sandwiches, flatbreads, wings and a range ‘tappertisers’ – all prepared with time to spare.
Famous for its French cuisine, lunch at Café Rouge can add a splash of elegance to an otherwise hectic lunch break. With premium baguettes from steak to salmon, plenty of vegetarian choices and freshly made salads, midday eating at Café Rouge is not just fast, but ideal if you’re trying to impress.
Gas Street Social
Some offices like to all venture out together. Whether there’s a purpose or not, there’s certainly a place. Gas Street Social’s ‘Social Plates’ suit this office dynamic perfectly, with a mouth-watering selection of lunch mains to choose from, including arancini balls, fish & chips and bourbon chicken wings.
Known as the Mailbox’s suntrap during the summer, the food on offer at Cote Brasserie makes it just as appealing in the winter. The Light Mains menu is a perfect refuelling option, with dishes such as spinach and mushroom crepes, and chicken and walnut salad to keep you going through the afternoon.
Sometimes it’s just impossible to get away. The emails are mounting up and the to-do list hasn’t moved. So step forward the city-centre cyclists who’ll pedal your lunch to the door. Participating restaurants include Pizza Express, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Strada and Everyman Cinema, so you can enjoy the Mailbox nosh at your desk.
Back to Business – Escape the Office

Despite it being its primary function, the office sometimes isn’t the best place to get work done. The phone is ringing, the person sat opposite is humming and no one can agree on the correct room temperature. Often your best work is done when you’re in your own personal space, where the printer never breaks and you don’t have to do the tea round. Here are the Mailbox’s serene substitutes for the office:
Described as ‘an oasis of space and quiet’, the AC Library forms part of the open plan AC Lounge. With a bank of workspaces, high speed complimentary WiFi, PCs, printers and an iMac, there’s potentially more facilities here than back at the office. Thirsty? AC Hotels has its own onsite Starbucks to keep you focused.
The Urban Room
Located on level two of the Mailbox, the Urban Room provides a welcome resting spot in the midst of shoppers and commuters. The comfy seating and ample table space means there’s always room to flip open your laptop and work your way through the 83 unread emails that have arrived since leaving the office
Chez Mal @ Malmaison
Already a popular laptop hangout for Mailbox locals, Chez Mal boasts a contemporary design with a quick and easy bar menu – perfect for a working lunch break. With plug sockets galore and coffee at your beck and call, this is the place to get charged up.
If you’re a weekend regular at the Mailbox’s popular cocktail bar, you’d be forgiven for overlooking Aluna as a place to get your work done. But call by in office hours and you’ll find personal booths, plenty of plug-ins for your laptop, and if it’s all getting a bit much, some of the finest selections of cocktails in the city.
The boss may be sceptical if you say you’re nipping off to the cinema to get some work done, and we’re sure the couple sat next to you in-front of the big screen won’t appreciate the sound of your keyboard. Luckily for everyone involved, the bar area at Everyman is comfy and quiet, with a full food and drink menu available. With most people’s motives to visit being purely to watch a film, many overlook this hidden gem of a breakout space, tucked away right in the corner of the Mailbox.
Now you’ve got a list of places to escape the office to, all you need is an excuse to get out. We’ll leave that up to you though.
